public relations
Be polite. It works!
A quick post (more on this later) but I wanted to get these thoughts down quickly.
A conversation with a couple of senior journalists earlier tonight reinforced the fact that we’re (public relations professionals and the clients we advise) quickly losing the art of being polite - specifically common courtesy and professionalism.
Ironic really for an industry that is focused on (positive) brand experiences and guiding businesses in the art of relating to their publics.
Yes, deadlines loom. Business is moving at the speed of thought. The cliches are endless.
But let’s not forget that we’re dealing with people above everything else.
Especially true if you’re asking them for a favour!
So, I took this away from the conversation - these common rules of engagement should be at the top of your minds when dealing with a journalist - or anyone else for that matter:
- Be punctual. They’re just as busy as you are so don’t expect them to wait for you
- Be prepared. You should know your company better then they do … if you don’t or you’re new then take the time to know it
- Don’t try and demand anything from them … ask. If they decline - and you’re sure you’ve tried your best - then accept their decision with good graces
- Just because you think your widget is the best thing since sliced bread doesn’t mean that they will. Accept it. Move on
- Speak to them. Emails, messaging services and blackberry’s are all well and good - but nothing beats a good old fashioned conversation
- ‘Please’ and ‘thank you’ are worth far more than expensive door gifts or invitations to the next ‘cool’ party
- If you promise them information make sure you give it to them
- Tell the truth. It’s really easy to get caught in a lie
- Be accessible - they may need to check a fact or get more information from you and playing phone tag is not the way to make your piece better
- Be relevant. Don’t take a story about the latest beer to a parenting magazine!
- Lists don’t work. Relationships do.
So what are your tips and stories?
And how canĀ you make sure you have the ability to meet the demands above?
